Nancy’s Bio:
Nancy El Gendy is a Term Lecturer in English at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her primary area of expertise is ethnic American literatures and cultures, particularly Arab American and Native American, and her secondary area is theory. Nancy’s recently defended dissertation, The Muslim Female Body in Twenty-First-Century Discourses by Arab and Arab American Women Writers, offers a cultural studies analysis of the normalization of the bodies of Arab and Arab American Muslim women; it traces and scrutinizes scattered details about the subject of the body of Muslim women across 21st-century Arab and Arab American women’s literatures. Through close textual readings and historical contextualization, the project explores various oppressive discourses that define Muslim women’s identities, teasing out multiple modes of resistance that writers develop to counteract Orientalist, Islamist, and other major powers which manufacture and enforce dominant body images. El Gendy is now revising her dissertation into a book, Veiling, Unveiling, Reveiling: The Female Body in Twenty-First-Century Discourse by Arab and Arab American Women Writers.
