The Ethnic Studies Department at Colorado State University invites applications for one 9-month tenure track position in Arab and Muslim American Studies. This is an Assistant Professor position and salary is commensurate with qualifications. The final result of this search will be only one hire. Starting date is August 16, 2017.
Qualifications and Responsibilities: Qualified applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in Arab and Muslim American Studies (or related field) by August 15, 2017.
- Required qualifications: The applicant must demonstrate potential excellence for research/scholarship in Arab and Muslim American Studies, demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching, and demonstrate potential for excellence in service/outreach. Service and outreach commitment to the Arab and Muslim American community should be demonstrated through past or current examples of mentoring, activism, and outreach.
- Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who can teach core ethnic studies courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level (i.e. introduction to ethnic studies, ethnic studies theory & history, etc.). Candidates who specialize on community-based research, comparative and intersectional methodology, or decolonial, feminist, and social-justice-oriented frameworks are also strongly encouraged to apply. We particularly encourage applications from scholars with a Ph.D. in Arab and Muslim American Studies, or Ethnic Studies with an emphasis in Arab and Muslim American Studies; however, we also welcome and encourage applicants with degrees in other disciplines.
- Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach four courses per year including graduate and undergraduate courses), mentor and advise students, have an active research agenda, and engage in outreach/service with the Arab and Muslim American community. Examples of potential candidates’ areas of expertise in Arab and Muslim American Studies include but are not limited to: transnationalism, gender/sexuality, social movements, immigration and diaspora, impacts of war and violence on Arab and Muslim Americans, and media representations.
Ethnic Studies Department: The Department currently consists of 10 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 5 non-tenure-track instructors. The faculty members come from diverse disciplinary backgrounds that encompass both the humanities and the social sciences. Ethnic Studies’ mission is “to critically examine the interlocking forces of domination that are rooted in socially constructed categories of gender, sexuality, class, race, disability and national status. Our faculty and researchers are committed to interdisciplinary, indigenous, international, and comparative approaches that challenge systemic marginalization of diverse populations.
We are especially committed to nurturing civic-minded and culturally informed students who strive to strengthen the communities in which they reside. In support of the land-grant mission of Colorado State University, the Department engages with communities on and off campus in order to effect meaningful change in public policy and social life.” The Department of Ethnic Studies offers an MA, BA, and minor in ethnic studies, along with a graduate certificate, major concentration, and minor in women’s studies. There are approximately 154 students enrolled in our programs.
